Personal Trainer Certification Exam Study Materials - ACE Fitness Certifications

I don't have a degree in this stuff, but I tend to learn quickly. Does this sound necessary/good deal or overkill?

I passed it without the books. I've heard of many people doing this. This was a while ago. They might have changed some things up.

I passed it many years ago, but I did think this exam was pretty easy. I'm sure some things have changed, but I'd look into getting your own study materials before shelling out that kind of money. Seems a bit excessive to me. NASM is the standard for many of the bigger chains, like Gold's and World Gym, along with Bally's and 24 hour fitness.
