4 killed in Alaska midair plane collision

By the CNN Wire Staff
UPDATED: 08:34 AM EDT 07.31.11

Four people were killed in a midair collision of two airplanes in Alaska, the Alaska State Patrol said Sunday.

All the dead were found at the crash site of a Cessna 180, patrol spokeswoman Megan Peters said.

The other aircraft, a Cessna 206, landed safely.

The two aircraft, both floatplanes, collided Saturday afternoon about 100 miles north of Anchorage, officials said.

The Cessna 180 crashed immediately and became engulfed in flames, Peters said.

The Cessna 206 was able to make it to Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport and landed safely, according to Federal Aviation Administration Public Affairs Manager Ian Gregor.

The pilot of the Cessna 206 was the only passenger on board and was not injured, said Peters.

The collision occurred around 2 p.m. (6 p.m. ET) near Amber Lake, which lies between Trapper Creek and Talkeetna.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the accident, with the NTSB acting as the lead investigative agency.

They need planes with better visibility or bigger windows!

Unregulated airspace (from the following video of a different crash without fatalities) means that there are no regulations other than the fact that pilots are expected to visually watch out for each other.
