"Air Raid Sirens Sound Over Baghdad

Friday, March 21, 2003

BAGHDAD ??? Air raid sirens are sounding over Baghdad as the Iraqi capital braces for a possible air assault from allied troops.

Anti-aircraft guns are firing into the sky.

Earlier in the day, eight American B-52 bombers took off from Fairford Airbase in Britain -- a sign that major nighttime air strikes could be hours away.

One U.S. official involved in military planning said the B-52s had been scrambled en masse and the air strikes would be bigger than anything seen thus far in the conflict.

On Wednesday, six other B-52s left Fairford to be pre-positioned closer to Iraq.

The 14 heavy, high-altitude bombers -- used for bombing campaigns during Vietnam -- are expected to be a big part of the coalition's "shock and awe" campaign. Each B-52 can carry 12 Joint Direct Attack Munitions (JDAMs), eight Conventional Air Launched Cruise Missiles (CALCMs) inside and another 12 externally, or a variety of other non-precision bombs."

Oliver North (on fox news) just reported tha he has seen more than 25 aircraft fly over headed towards baddad. To add support to the B-52 bombers.

Explosions hit Baghdad
Pentagon: Friday is 'A-Day' for air war
Friday, March 21, 2003 Posted: 1:06 PM EST (1806 GMT)

Smoke rises over Baghdad on Friday evening at about 9 p.m. local time (1 p.m. EST), amid a barrage of airstrikes.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- A series of large explosions rocked Iraq's capital sending plumes of smoke and fire into the skies over Baghdad as the intense coalition air assault got underway.

Pentagon officials told CNN's Barbara Starr that Friday is "A-Day," the day a promised campaign of "shock and awe" is to hit Iraq.

Top administration and U.S. intelligence officials say there is "complete confusion ... complete disarray" in the senior Iraqi leadership, CNN Senior White House Correspondent John King reported Friday.

The officials say that if Saddam Hussein is alive, he is "not in minute-to-minute control" of the Iraqi military and the Iraqi government, King reported.

I've got a live video feed going on my PC from MSNBC.com. It's a live camera feed from downtown Baghdad. Crazy stuff.
