I had one of the first Smartphones by Qualcomm/Kyocera in 2001. They all copied that.

Yea but just wait and see how much of an "improvement" Apple has made to their new iPhone 5. As much as I like the iPhone, the form factor is getting a little stale. If designs and leaks hold any merit, all they did was make the new one a little thinner, taller and included a metal/aluminum/NON-glass portion to the back, making the phone around 4 inches.

The first generation design was great. They shouldn't have changed it into a damn glass sandwich bordered with metal/aluminum/whatever the fuck it is. I believe this phone was the last to have Steve's input. Next year's phone will be based off of the new head honchos over at Cupertinoville

Samsung Ordered to Pay Apple $1.05B - YouTube

After a year of scorched-earth litigation, a jury decided Friday that Samsung ripped off the innovative technology used by Apple to create its revolutionary iPhone and iPad. (Aug. 24)

Ha Ha.....SAMSUNG got caught taking a 'Bite' out of 'APPLE'.......

Samsung is appealing, obviously.

And I presume this has as much to do with google and android as samsung.

I own an Iphone and LOVE it only because the stuff I use it for at work is a bit more smoother then my old android. But when it comes down to apps and function the andriod owns with the opensource market. I can see the reason for the lawsuit, but seriously Apple your a multibillion $ company are you that scared of Android?

Apple Inc. has submitted a list of eight Samsung Electronics Co. products it wants pulled from shelves and banned from the U.S. market. It comes after a jury found Samsung copied the iPhone and iPad in creating and marketing the products. (Aug. 27)

I knew they was going to win.. They pretty much took over the world lol

^^^ they have every thing you buy now says apple compliant... Even the gym equipment has apple chargers built into the cardio machines. Other then work this is one of the reasons I made the swap. I like the versatility of the android so much more, but I personally get more out of my iphone. Only good thing for me about the droid was it was easier to hide test msg, pictures and porn.

I'm a neo-phyte on tech stuff, but Apple and Microsoft are not open source correct?

And Android (as you state) is open source.

Can somebody throw me a quick definition of 'open source?'

(Pardon my ignorance.)

Open Source means like to pick at scabs... But seriously it's for tech minded individuals who don't mind spending a day fixing a phone they just screwed up by trying too many tweaks. I would have enjoyed an open source phone when I was in my 20's but these days I don't have time to goof around just to get my phone ultra techie personalized.

open source basically is the opposite of proprietary. the underlying code of the operating system is open, not copyrighted or owned by anyone. those that understand the language used by the OS can write their own programs, change certain settings, etc. on their own.

for instance last night I rooted my Android tablet. I basically wiped out the old boot ROM with a new one that gave me super user access (called root) to the operating system. Then I reloaded the newest version of the Android OS. I can now overclock the processor or add in devices that would not normally operate on that device. Or install the updates as I see vs having them downloaded automatically, etc. I was able to add a USB to Ethernet adapter to my tablet and a USB to serial adapter neither of which would have functioned with out having root access. My tablet now has the same functionality as my laptop and it cost me $0 and only a couple of hours of my time.

OK, thanks Manic and LAM.

Every single person I know in real life has problems with them after 6 months to a year. Pretty much a paper weight by then.

I feel the same way, but only in regards to people who keep their android devices stock. The beauty of android is the ability to root it. (Which I have not been able to do.. though I used to tweak the fuck out of blackberries back in the day :wits: )

Android is more of a techie\geek thing, that gets pushed to every day users. Every day users don't do the required maintenance to keep these devices running smoothly (clear cache, history, call logs, texts etc)

That being said, with the iphone 5 coming out in a few weeks, I finally got the balls to try and root. To no success. Fuck me, I can't even have fun in my final days of droid lol

What does "root" mean?

To grant root user access. Basically, to make it where you have full admin priveliges to. Add delete or fuck up anything you like.

Its all based off linux when it comes to android

tell your friends to stop buying shit phones. it's not androids fault when you buy a $200 crap phone. I have a two year old galaxy s that doesn't have a single problem. I still use it as a media player at the gym because Im not worried about accidentally breaking it.

depending on the phone you want to root, it's sometimes as easy as installing an app.

Rooted my bionic, incredible, and razr maxx.

Had an Iphone for 2months just to see the hype, it blew hard..
I jailbreak it and still have to buy apps, wtf

ditto...plus electronics on the low end of the scale regardless of the market are not designed to last. electronics for the most part are expected to last as long as the warranty, that's how they are manufactured.

When is the iPhone 5 coming out?

Probably in another six months. They usually release a completely outdated product by the electronics norm in this fashion.
