Considering the impact SARS could have,.........

6000 airport screening staff axed
From correspondents in Washington
May 01, 2003

THE US government is to axe 6000 of the 56,000 passenger and baggage screeners at the country's airports to save money.

It will also abolish a requirement for police to staff all airport checkpoints.

"While we still live in a dangerous world, it also is time to assess our workplace requirements in relation to budget realities," Transport Security Administration chief James Loy said today.

Loy said the measures would "refine" aviation security.

They would also provide $US2.3 billion ($3.7 billion) to airlines to cover their share of security costs since the September 11, 2001 attacks, he said.

Only 13 months ago, Transport Secretary Norman Mineta launched a program to hire more than 30,000 new screeners to beef up security in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks.

how 'bout this...all the hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars the government is going to give the families of the victims of 911..how about using that money for a good use? Ppaying for those guards to keep their jobs...
That would make sense...

I was listining to a radio talk show a couple of weeks ago... They discussed this issue an made some sense of it.

The initial hiring of so many screeners was a "knee jerk" re-action to 9/11. They over did it and they are laying off to help level out the actuall needs of the airline industry. While 6000 people is a lot, It's not going to weaken our ability to screen the airlines.

They hired too many to begain with.

Make sense?

In my mind, the SARS issue (in relation to the layoffs) is nill.
