I am so friggin' frustrated right now. This past Christmas I got a new DELL desktop computer, and I have had to wipe out the entire hard drive like 5 times now because of excessive pop-ups, internet browser always freezing, etc. I have tried the basic pop-up blockers and ad-aware programs, and nothing seems to be working. Is there a program that will stop this crap?

Thanks!

I've heard good things about the blocker included with ZoneAlarm Pro, but it doesnt block pop-ups at all for me. I just downloaded RealPlayer today and the Google search bar...its blocked everything today. 10 pop-ups blocked already since 130

Downside...it blocks PM pop-ups here at IM

Yeah there are always downsides, but I can handle turning the blocker on and off when I want to view attached images, etc. I just f*cking HATE closing all of these damn pop-ups everytime I turn around. And I am not sure what's doing it. It's random pop-ups, nothing porn related or anything, just Ad-Blocker pop-ups even, the stupidest sh*t ever. The whole Lycos search sh*t.

For the longest friggin time I was plagued with pop-ups and my PC slowed to a crawl. Now I have EMS Freesurfer mk II and I love it. Absolutely love it. It blocks ALLL pop-up adds and I can set it to not block some I do want up, like IM PM pop-ups and I have no problem at all surfing the net on a normal basis. I also have ad aware that cleans my system of spyware and I do a scan every other day. My PC runs smooth as a shaved....

My brother on the other hand, has the exact same things I have and he still has pop-up problems. He has the cheap internet provider so I dont know if that has anything to do with it. His PC is "better" than mine but its also super super slow because of all that.

Does anyone know for sure? I mean could it be the internet service provider??

Yep. This is what I use. It blocks most of the pop ups. Occasionally, what one may slip through.

"Spybot search and destroy" is a must. It's much better than adaware, in my opinion.

You can unblock certain sites dude, I use the Google toolbar.

http://toolbar.google.com

AdAware (update it often) for spyware stuff.

Grisoft 6.xxxxxxx like Prince mentioned is still phree.

I did choose to unblock this site, but I still wasnt getting PM pop-ups for some reason. It does seem to block popups better than anything else Ive used so far.

I get no pop ups- ever

1st- anti-virus- running all the time to scan accessed files- antivirus is useless if it's not updated- i do it at least once a week----also windows update is a must-weekly

2nd- ad-aware, spybot- all updated and run upon start up to get any files that somehow got into your system config files

3rd- Zone Alarm Pro- duh

4th- either google toolbar (ok), firefox instead of IE(best option), or pop up stopper program

5th- go through your msconfig program, and check to make sure that start up programs are checked only if you need them (this part can be very tricky-be careful)

-----If none of this works, bring your PC to my place and i'll hook you up

I have used SpyBot S & D, Adaware, HijackThis and CWS Shredder...with all of these tools, there is no spyware I can't kill.:)

HijackThis is good for those hidden things.

Hmm, I get enough PMs that it actually is annoying, I just prefer to check the count but I STILL haven't set it to stop popping up on this board yet :D

Newbs! Firefox is where its at. More features than IE, built in and customizable pop up blocker, and a hundred times faster. Not to mention there arent 100,000 russian teenagers writing up viruses and exploits for it, a la IE. :D

Okay I rebooted my entire hard drive and got Norton Anti-Virus running now, Ad-Aware, EMS Freesurfer mk II, and I switched from Internet Explorer to Mozilla Firefox. I am hoping that everything works out okay now! :thumb:

keep all your software up to date, and if you have a broadband connection, make sure you have a firewall--

good luck

Everybody here has the right idea!... especially the Anti-Virus and Firewall. But none of the above mentioned is 100% full proof. There are some .asp websites that have a way of getting by the safe-guards, and what they do is actually download a .EXE executable program on your hard drive... generally placed in the Windows registry. When this happens, your pretty much screwed! This executable program is activated by your browser and when the pop-ups start exploding all over your monitor screen, they aren't coming from the internet, they are coming straight off your hard drive. You can use applications like ad-aware, spy bot, etc... which are good at cleaning the crap from your memory, registry, temp files, and so on... but the executable is still resting on your hard drive waiting to attack again. I had such a monster on my computer about a year ago, and since I have 3 computers at home, I just used one of the others for internet stuff and disconected the infected unit from the web. I use Dreamweaver for my webprogramming and you can test your pages without internet access... pop ups were flying all over the freakin screen. I spent about 4 months looking for that bastard program and eventually had to just clean the HD.

Spy applications are good at cleaning the floors but they are totally useless at finding the .asp cancer! If somebody here has had this same problem and knows a way to find the executable program so it can be deleted... then please tell me..! :adore:

You should be good to go now. Another browser I use is Opera. Not enough ppl use it so no one writes shit to exploit it ;) If you're using P2P software you'll still get a ton of spyware from that depending on which one you use.

this is the absolute BEST way to stop pop-ups, trojans, spy ware etc. go to this site and purchase PC Lite. http://www.litepc.com/

Bascially you install the program before you install your windows OS. the programs makes the installation of IE an option from the control panel and does not install any of the code that it runs on. by not installing IE you are taking away the largest security hole in Windows as IE is a complete sieve. then all you have to do is install Netscape or another 3rd party browser...

Firefox is free... no exploits... no trojans... no popups... more features...

Eventually you guys will stop wasing your time trying to patch the sinking IE ship and come to mozilla. :D

just installed it, so far I like it, although I did not like the fact that the Flash plug-in is not installed by default and when you go to a website with Flash it does not display correctly, nor does the browser tell you why.

There's an extensions page on the mozilla site with somewhere around 100 different add ons for firefox. Just browse through it before you start using the browser.

also- since your PC is all nice and fixed- if you store a lot of media or important documents or files....you can partition your hard drive, basically making your PC function as if you had multiple drives....that way, you can keep your boot drive with only necessary windows stuff...and put any important files on your new partition/s....that way- if you ever have to re-format, the pc only formats the boot partition and your other data remains saved as if it were on a different drive

Does anyone know anymore about this? Looks interesting. Buy I cannot find a price for it. And I also am curious if it's really worth paying for anything, since there are so many free programs out there.

I remember minus IE some programs ran 3% faster.

I still use IE though. Every time I hear how fast the rendering is for some other browser, its usually bullcrap unless its Opera with no Java or something. When Netscape 6.0 came out I heard how great it was, and it was buggy horseshit.

Thats because netscape is buggy horseshit. :D

Try firefox, dammit.

PC Lite is $40

Hey how bout a browser like IE I am getting fed up with this shit.

Firefox is the only way to go! http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/ Once you start using multiple tabs you will never want to go back to IE. Unfortunately at work I have to use IE and I can't stand it. I never get any pop ups with Firefox.

I down loaded Firefox and it doesnt have half the stuff as IE and some stuff doesnt line up right? Am I doing something wrong?
