My aunt Rita (yes that is her real name) and her husband and daughter, my cousin, live in Houston and they have evacuated to my other aunt's house in Dallas.

They're house is only a few feet from the water in houston, so I guess it is going to be destroyed...I think they are covered, but I mean...What are they supposed to do?
 
I think that New Orleans has taught us one very important lesson: Get the fuck out!

My sister's husband's family lives there. I'll need to call them today.
 
I seen the hurricane on the news here today, it looks HUGE

Well people I am still here in houston, actually I am 30 miles away in Humble. I was let out of work early yesterday and I had no intention of leaving BECAUSE the freeways are backed up and at a standstill. One friend told me that she has been on the road for 10 hours and she is STILL in Houston. So whats the point of me trying to leave?? I have other family members that are going to try to get to my house, my sister and neice are the only family members that are actually trying to leave. Oh, and the cell phone service is seriously fuc*ked up, I can only text a few people, but can't make any calls.

One thing that pisses me of is the local news, it seems as though they don't want to report on the good news, which is that the storm has weakened and may possibly be a catagory 3 when it hits land. I read that on the Internet. Either way the weather is horrible but they dont want to give people any hope. I guess that makes for a better story???
 
I'm still here too. Craig wants to go, but how? THe roads are all backed up and stupid packed with people. We should be good for several days afterward. More concerned with the high winds, rain, and falling trees.

I understand, but you need to be careful. I wish the gas prices would hold off, because I don't get payed until Friday, and I have no money to fill up on. And I'm very very low.

Be safe!! I know it wasn't as big as Rita, but I remember Hurricane Hugo when I was a little kid living in Charlotte, NC back in 1988, and I was terrified.
 
Stock a shit-load of Water (fill bottles, the bathtub and any other large container you have), non-perishable foods, dry pet food, and rain gear.

Toiletries, Baby Wipes, and mosquito repellant.

Xtra fuel (fill any gas-cans you can). If you own any camping gear, keep it handy.

Most importantly, bunker your safe room with anything you can to reinforce it and keep YOU safe. Stockpiling supplies does you no good if you have no place to ride out the storm.

It looks like we will riding it out here in New Orleans regardless if she turns north into us or not. We're fortifying our positions and boarding up windows as I write this.

I lived through Hurricane Alicia 1983, that was a category 3. We stayed in the closet under the stairs. I don't remember being scared but I do recall going outside afterward and all of the roofing shingles strewn about the neighborhood and many tree branches all over and our neighbors pine tree laying across their garage. That was in Bellaire.
Alot of trees were downed that year because it had been raining alot and the ground was saturated and soft making the roots easier to be yanked out. So if it's been raining there alot lately be aware alot of the trees will come down.
 
We are staying. We should be fine. We have food, water, candles, charcoal, chicken, veggies, rice. protein, protein bars, dog food, cat food, etc.

Its actually suppose to go more East of us which is the area my Mom lives. They've already left.

I am from Orange, Texas which is about 80 miles east of Houston and 15 miles from Louisiana. All of my family has evacuated, and I hope all my friends are safe. I live in L.A. now so I am out of harms way.

For those still there, try to stay safe.

My Mom lives in Bridge City, my sister in Nederland they are both outta there since yesterday. Its suppose to come in at Sabine Pass. Won't be anything left of that little city.

People in central tex. were actually scared yesterday. People in line for gas, water and other things flying off the shelves...
I didn't panic though, I knew it wasn't going to be bad here, especially since the hurricane has turned more eastern.

They damn well better be scared or at least prepared once a hurricane hits land it spins up tornadoes left and right. Besides what if it hits land and decides to bend to the west? There's alot of flat nothingness between Houston and Austin.

Well today I decided to venture out to my apt. to get some things, then come back to Humble. Its so strange to see Houston looking like a ghost town. Very few cars on the highway and NO GAS. There was only one gas station open that was being supervised by the police. Then I saw a gas truck being escorted by 6 police cars. Anyhow, so i made it back home, surfed the net for some stories on the situation. And i started reading some and one lady was OUTRAGED because she THINKS the city didn't prepare enough for the hurricane. WTF??? She was one of the few hundreds/thousands of people that got stranded on the freeway. Most people just ran out of gas, gave up or their car just overheated because of the traffic. Her statements PISSED me off because I think the city, Mayor Bill White and other city leaders have done a great job in preparing us for whats to come. I mean, you have 1.3 million people leaving the city at the same time . . . . . its not going to be easy. Give them a BREAK!

You will ALWAYS have those critics who choose to completely ignore and/or overlook a leaders positive efforts and accomplishments for the sake of one or two percieved discrepencies in the overall scheme.

That's just the nature of some human beings I'm afraid.

I sum it up by describing 3 different types of people...

Three people stand in front of an open meadow spreading out before a wooded valley.

The first person looks out and sees open space. Nothing of consequence.

The second person looks out and see nothing but the thorn bushes and manure piles.

The Third person looks out and notices through the open space, thorns and manure piles, that there are beautiful flowers, birds, wildlife and shade trees. A beautiful stream flowing into a spring-fed pond.

My point is, people often choose to see only what they want to. They are so self absorbed in thier own precepts and perceptions that they overlook the blessings around them.

Stay strong and hangeth thou in there.

She's just mad at herself for not having the foresight to realize how congested the freeways would be, I've lived in Houston I know how bad rush hour can be so I would have either left extra early or waited until today to leave. Actually I lived in Cy-Fair so I would have just stayed.

I grew up in Bridge City actually, my parents still live there. The rest of my family lives in Orange. I lived in Nederland for 3 years before moving out to L.A., so I have a ton of friends there (can't get a hold of anyone of them). My family are all up at Lake Sam Rayburn staying in my Uncle's lake house. The bad thing is, it's not far enough away from the storm and they are worried about all the damn pine trees around the house.

I wish your Mom and Sister the best.
 
It's funny, these people who have evacuated Houston and the south, are coming in to my store, and Spending money on games...on games...
I'm like " Wake the fuck up! Your house is about to be destroyed and you are wasting your money on games???"

It's a comfort measure keep the kids mind off of the tragedy and out of my hair with a few games while we're holed up at my In-laws.
